Organizing Your Home Remodeling Project

drywall installation orlando planning your home remodelWhile remodeling your home is an exciting project, it can also bring about a great deal of stress. Between finalizing your plans, finding the right contractors, and nailing down your schedule, it may seem like the end is never going to be in sight. The best way to avoid the home remodeling jitters and to make sure every part of your home receives the attention it needs is to create a detailed and organized schedule.

Putting every part of your remodeling down on paper may seem like an insurmountable task, but once you get started, the pieces will start falling into place. Here’s how we suggest you organize your home remodeling project:

  • Work from the top down. If repairing your roof is part of your home renovation plan, that should be the first task you undertake. That way, you’ll be able to take a look at any structural damage and make sure the rest of your renovations won’t collapse on you. If you put a new roof on your building before you start adjusting the rest of the home, you’ll protect your work from the elements as well.
  • Next, it’s time to demolish. If you’re knocking down walls to open your floorplan or expand a room, that should be your next step. When you’re planning your demolition, don’t forget to rent a sizeable waste container to clean up the debris. If you won’t be staying in the house, it’s a good idea to knock out as much as possible to make the rebuilding easier.
  • Install your structural pieces. If you need to add any support structures for new drywall, it’s time to add those in next!
  • Turn the lights on. One more step before you install your drywall – make sure your electrical and plumbing systems are set up correctly. Once these systems are ready to roll, you’ll install insulation just before you:
  • Install your drywall. Once the drywall is in place and you have all the windows and trim ready, it’s time to bring in your texturing and paint professionals. It’s a great idea to have the same company that installs your drywall take care of the texturing as they’ll leave your walls ready to paint and decorate.

When you choose a drywall installation company in Orlando for your next renovation project, opt for one that can take care of the installation and texturing quickly and professionally so you can keep right on schedule. Choose New Ceilings and you’re in great hands. To learn more or to schedule your free consultation, call 407-378-6040.

Building Materials Through the Years

drywall repair in orlando building materials throughout the yearsHome construction technology has come a long way since the first residences were built. As people continued to build homes and the list of readily available materials expanded, builders found new and more efficient ways to create houses that not only protect their residents but also have a smaller impact on the environment and help save money. Now, many neighborhoods are constructed similarly, with some older homes making way for new construction.

We do still see plenty of brick and plaster houses in existence, but for the most part, general contractors have selected drywall as their building material of choice. Take a look at common building materials in years past and learn how drywall has improved the state of the house:

  • Brick. Brick in its many forms has been used as a construction material since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Initially formed by drying rectangles of mud in the sun, brick can now refer to any rectangular unit of building material laid in mortar. These literal building blocks are commonly made from clay, concrete, sand, and lime, and provide insulation and a pleasant, somewhat old-fashioned appearance.
  • Wood. Many homes and buildings still begin as wood frames, although those methods are quickly shifting toward rebar and metal. Wood is an excellent insulator and can help keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter, meaning that you save money on electricity. Keep in mind, though, that wood isn’t the best choice for Florida homes as it can be susceptible to water damage and rot.
  • Drywall. No matter the materials that make the frame of your home, there’s a good chance you’re surrounded by drywall on all sides. Drywall is one of the easiest wall materials for contractors to install, on top of being more environmentally friendly to make than other materials. Drywall is versatile and provides solid structure while giving homeowners flexibility.

We think it’s no wonder that drywall is the material of choice for modern-day construction. Some estimates say that 20 billion square feet of drywall is manufactured every year in the U.S. It’s lightweight and doesn’t cost much to produce. When you need drywall repair in Orlando, work with the team that knows the material. To learn more or to schedule your free consultation, call New Ceilings at 407-378-6040 today.

What’s the Difference Between a Handyman and a Contractor?

Orlando Drywall Repair difference between a handyman and a contractorAs you’ve been searching for the right person to take care of your drywall repair, you’ve probably come across a number of listings for local handymen. A slightly old-fashioned term, a handyman’s title says it all – he’s handy around the house and can help you fix a variety of issues around the house. You’ve probably also noticed that the handymen’s fees are lower than those of the general contractors you’ve found – so who should you pick to do your repair work?

Here at New Ceilings, we always recommend that you don’t make your selections based on price alone. The key difference between a handyman and a drywall repair contractor is the licensing required by the state. According to the state of Florida, a handyman does not require a license to perform basic repair and maintenance tasks for homeowners. This allows them to keep their costs lower.

That’s not to say that a handyman’s work is lower in quality. The handyman you’ve found are hopefully backed by a handful of positive reviews, whether online or by word of mouth. Working as a handyman is a good way to provide homeowners with affordable repairs around the house. The licensing really comes in for bigger jobs, i.e. those that require the person doing the repairs to work with plumbing or electrical systems.

So when should you hire a handyman for your home? In general, we would say you can easily use a handyman for smaller jobs. Think a couple small nail pops, a clogged disposal, or installing a ceiling fan. When it comes to repairing, replacing, or installing larger sections of wall, however, it’s best that you leave the work to the licensed professionals like the drywall repair team at New Ceilings.

Are you ready to find the right drywall repair professionals for your needs? Checking their licensing and credentials is a good place to start. Always make sure your selected drywall repair company comes out in person to give you an estimate so they know the full scope of the project and you’re not nickled and dimed when the bill comes. To learn more or to schedule your free consultation, call New Ceilings at 407-378-6040 today.

Why do Drywall Repair Companies Get Negative Yelp Reviews?

drywall repair companies orlando yelp reviewsIf you’ve been searching for the perfect drywall repair contractor for your home’s needs, we’re betting you’ve seen a couple of cringeworthy reviews. Even the highest-rated drywall repair companies have one or two off days.  It seems that customers tend to turn to review sites like Yelp and Google Plus when they’re upset and seeking assistance; however, if you dig a little deeper, you may see a common theme among a handful of the negatives.

Here at New Ceilings, our service to our customers is just as important as the quality of our work. The following three reasons seem to be the most common complaints consumers have when working with drywall repair companies:

  • Lack of communication. The top complaint you’ll see on Yelp is a lack of communication between the contractor and the customer. Beyond high quality materials, communication is the most important part of any drywall repair job. You should work with a contractor who sets clear expectations about budget and timeline and keeps you informed along every step of the way.
  • Scheduling issues. Sometimes it can be difficult to set up your schedule so you can meet with your drywall team as necessary, and your drywall repair contractor should understand that. However, if your chosen company has to reschedule appointments multiple times, you might want to search for someone else. Outside of emergencies, there’s no reason for your team to cancel with you.
  • Poor customer service. The third most common complaint is overall poor customer service, which covers the first two points. In general, your drywall repair company should treat you with respect and display professionalism from start to finish. You should be able to get a feeling for a company’s work ethic within your first meeting.

A company that has repeat customers and lots of customer referrals is probably a good choice for your project. Look for reviews that discuss your selected company’s promptness, professionalism, and ease of communication. New Ceilings is a great place to start. Earth Day Every Day: Going Green in Your Home

eco-friendly drywall repair for your homeJust about every company you encounter today will have a statement about how they’re dedicated to going green and saving the environment. In the same fashion, we’ve seen homeowners install solar panels and trade in their gas guzzlers for hybrids. After all, eco-friendly practices not only save the environment – they also save you money!

Here at New Ceilings, we’re no different, and we like to celebrate Earth Day every day. Are you trying to go green in your home? Here are 3 easy suggestions from your favorite drywall repair team in Orlando:

  • Switch out your light bulbs. Our homes are almost constantly lit, which in turn generates heat and requires more work from our air conditioners. Switching from incandescent to CFL light bulbs can reduce your energy consumption by almost 66% and help to keep your home cooler!
  • Pay attention to your paint. Getting ready to repaint your home’s interior? Make sure you choose a low-VOC paint, like Sherwin-Williams’ Harmony line. Limiting VOCs helps protect the atmosphere against volatile compounds. As an added bonus, limiting VOCs inside the home can help keep your family healthier.
  • Keep your drywall in good shape. You read that right! Drywall’s primary function is to protect you and your family by keeping the inside firmly separated from the outside. When your walls are cracked or have holes, you’re putting your air conditioner under a lot of stress and may be allowing interior chemicals to seep outside.

Going green really isn’t difficult with a little forethought and planning. When you need to tackle the big issues, it’s best that you get in touch with the professionals for the most cost and time efficiency. Ready to get started on your green home project? Call the drywall repair team in Orlando at New Ceilings at 407-378-6040 to learn more today.

Drywall Troubles? Do This, Not That.

drywall repair team orlando do this not thatThe internet is one of the most powerful tools in any homeowner’s toolbox. Whenever a problem arises, all you have to do is hop on your computer or smartphone to get expert advice in seconds. With that in mind, you’d think that anyone could be a home repair professional, right? There’s just one problem – you’ll probably be inundated with too many answers. How do you pick the right ones?

Here at New Ceilings, our drywall repair team in Orlando has been around drywall for long enough that we can give you a few definitive answers. Check out this guide when you find a dilemma on your hands:

  • I found a small hole in one section of my drywall.

DO THIS: Do what it takes to get rid of the issue right away. If it’s a very small issue, like a nail pop, you should be able to use drywall compound to repair it on your own. If not, schedule an appointment with a pro today!

NOT THAT: Don’t wait until the small problem turns into a bigger one to get it repaired. Even if it seems minuscule, it’s best to take care of the issue now.

  • My wallpaper is starting to peel off.

DO THIS: Anyone that tells you wallpaper removal is an easy job has obviously never done it themselves. Wallpaper removal can be an absolute mess if you don’t know what you’re doing – even if it’s starting to peel away on its own. Call a professional.

NOT THAT: Resist the urge to peel, no matter how tempting those corners are! You might take away a chunk of wall with it.

  • I think I might see some water damage on my ceiling.

DO THIS: As soon as you notice water damage, check the outside of your home to see if you can find an entry point; if you can’t see one, make sure your water fixtures are working in case it’s a burst pipe. Even if you can’t find the cause, get a repair team to your home ASAP – leaving your drywall wet can be expensive and even detrimental to your health!

NOT THAT: Don’t try and take care of water damage issues on your own. You could come in contact with mold or do serious damage to the plumbing and electric behind the walls.

We hope our handy guide has helped to clear up a few burning questions you had about drywall repair! If you find yourself with damaged drywall, get in touch with New Ceilings, the drywall repair team in Orlando. Give us a call at 407-378-6040 to schedule your free consultation.

A Quick and Dirty Guide to Household Mold

drywall installation orlando household moldMold is one of our least favorite four-letter words – just the sound of it is enough to make a homeowner’s neck hairs stand on end. When it comes to this household menace, it’s better to take extra preventative steps rather than waiting to clean up the damage. But some rooms of your home, like your bathrooms, are exposed to moisture more frequently than other areas, making them more susceptible to mold growth. What kind of action should you take to keep your home and family safe?

If you see a small patch of mold inside your home, you need to take care of the situation quickly. From the Orlando drywall repair specialists at New Ceilings, here are a few things to keep in mind when you see mold on your walls:

  • If it’s mildew, wipe it down thoroughly. Mildew and mold are similar substances – both are types of fungal spores that thrive in warm, damp areas. But while a major mold infestation may require some serious demolition to get rid of, mildew just needs a cleaning cloth and some white vinegar. Be sure to wipe down mildew-prone areas at least once a week to keep it from spreading.
  • If the mold is on a porous surface, you’ll need to replace it. Mold has a way of digging its roots deep into any porous surface, making it impossible to extract. If you see mold on carpet, foam, or drywall, you’re looking at a replacement project. Mold on glass and metal, however, can be cleaned – but be sure to take the proper precautions before you start.
  • If you’re sensitive to mold, call the professionals right away. Most online mold removal guides will tell you that it’s ok to try and clean up a patch of mold under one square foot on your own, but if you’re sensitive to mold, don’t even try it. Mold can cause severe health issues in people, including respiratory infections, chronic headaches, and more.

Mold is a formidable foe, but when you’re prepared and you know what kind of mold you’re looking at, you can make the best decision for your home. You’ll need the help of a mold specialist to remove any drywall that has been infested. If you need new drywall installation in Orlando, get in touch with New Ceilings at 407-378-6040 today.

How to Remove Your Drywall Anchors

orlando drywall repair experts remove drywall anchorsIf you want to hang wine racks, artwork, sconces, or just about anything that weighs more than a sheet of paper on your walls, you’ll need to get familiar with drywall anchors. Available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, these devices help to create a firm fitting for whatever hangers you use. But once you get them in there, you may be wondering: how do I get them out?

Drywall anchors were designed to stay put, so getting them out without ruining your walls can be a task. Luckily for you, we’ve removed our fair share of anchors in the field. Below is a step-by-step guide to getting those anchors out of the wall:

  • Assess the type of anchor you’re removing. Not all drywall anchors are created equal! Check whether the offending anchor is metal or plastic, and how big it is. The smaller, thin plastic anchors should come out with a set of needlenose pliers and an easy tug; the thicker metal ones will require a bit more work.
  • Try backing it out. If the anchor doesn’t come out with a gentle pull, try unscrewing it. Using a hammer, tap a Philips head screwdriver as far back into the anchor port as you can. Then, turn the screwdriver counter-clockwise to begin releasing its grasp on the sheetrock. A lot of times, the teeth of the anchor will catch on the screwdriver right away, making removal a breeze.
  • If all else fails, recess it. If neither of those two methods work, your last-ditch option is to recess the anchor into the wall. To do this, use a utility knife to gently score a circle around the head of the anchor. Grab a screwdriver that’s thicker than the anchor port and gently tap against it until it sinks through.

Once you’re done with any of these methods, you’ll need to repair and texture your walls before you repaint.

If your drywall anchors don’t want to budge, don’t force them. Applying excessive force can cause large holes and severe cracking in the area. Instead, get some help from the experts. Give the Gift of Organization This Year

orlando drywall repair specialists offer organization tipsEvery year, getting our homes and offices organized takes a top spot on our list of resolutions. After all, a clutter-free environment helps reduce stress, encourage productivity, and gives us something to be proud of at the end of the day. But putting it on the list and actually getting it done are two very different things, and without the right set of tools, organization can be downright difficult.

That’s why we think your loved ones deserve the gift of organization this year. From the drywall repair specialists at New Ceilings, here are 3 ideas to help you bring a little peace and harmony into your loved ones’ lives:

  • For the overworked head of the family: Chalkboard Paint. Managing a family is a full-time job, no matter what age your kids may be. It helps to make sure all assignments are done on time and chores are completed when there’s a centralized family hub to keep everything in place. That’s why we love magnetized chalkboard paint – you can hang notices, leave notes, and set schedules in one neat little package.
  • For the enthusiastic handyman: Pegboard Tool Storage. It seems like a handyman’s toolkit never stops growing. If the DIY’er in your life is always digging through some chest or another to get the right part, help them set up a pegboard storage wall, which is easy to customize and lets you keep all the necessities within arm’s reach.
  • For the makeup addict: Wall-Mounted Vanity. Some may consider the makeup kit to be the tool chest of the face. Though the contents are different, one thing remains the same: they both keep growing. Give your favorite fashionista an easy way to store and organize all their lipsticks, nail polishes, and eyeshadows with a wall-mounted vanity, complete with lighting and a variety of storage areas.

Taking an interest in your loved ones’ passions is a great way to show them you care. Before you install any of these great organization tools, you’ll want to make sure your drywall is in good shape and ready to carry a little extra weight. Need repairs before you’re ready to roll? Beauty Isn’t Only Paint-Deep

drywall repair orlando before you paintAny lived-in home is going to acquire a few dents and dings over the years. Whether they come from rowdy siblings roughhousing in the afternoon or from a furniture mishap during your move-in, your drywall is sure to see its fair share of damage. But when it comes time to repaint your walls or try out a new color, many homeowners forget to patch up these injuries before the roller hits the paint.

The drywall repair experts at New Ceilings want to remind you that drywall repair is an important first step before any paint job, interior or exterior, large or small. Here are just a  few reasons why:

  • No matter how durable it is, paint won’t stretch across a crack or a hole. Those dents and dings you find before applying your new color will still be there after the paint dries. Simply put, if you hate looking at them now, painting over them won’t fix the issue. You need to give your paint something to adhere to.
  • Your new paint won’t last as long as it should. This especially applies to exterior painting. Before you even think about painting, you need to scrape off any old, damaged paint and sand down the rough patches. Leaving damage as-is on your walls means that your new paint won’t lay the way you want it to, and there’s a good chance it won’t dry properly, either.
  • You might be covering up a serious issue. If you’re repainting your home to cover up some discoloration, there’s a chance you’re covering up water damage or other issues behind your walls. When you pay attention to them, your walls will speak volumes about their condition. Simply covering the issue will not make it go away – in fact, it will make it worse, with time.

As you can see, beautiful walls go much deeper than a few coats of paint. To ensure you achieve professional quality paint job inside or out, you need smooth, structurally sound walls as a base. Not in the mood to hassle with drywall repair? Get in touch with New Ceilings for your next home painting job. We perform quality drywall repair before any paint job begins.
