The Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process

Are your popcorn ceilings disgusting? While they probably looked great when they were first installed, now they have years of dust from air conditioning vents and maybe even water stains from leaks. It’s time to look into popcorn removal in Orlando!

Materials you will need:

  • Small spray bottle or lawn sprayer (for larger room)

  • Scraper or putty knife

  • Masking tape

  • Plastic sheeting

  • Breathing mask

  • Joint compound

  • Drywall knife

  • Contractor size garbage bags

In order to prepare the room, you’ll want to remove everything from the walls and ceilings and then cover your furniture and floors with plastic sheeting. Use the masking tape to attach the plastic to the walls. Make sure the entire floor (and anything on it) is covered.

  1. The first step in popcorn removal in Orlando is to make sure you don’t have any harsh chemicals in your ceiling. Older homes in particular are susceptible to having harsh chemicals within the ceiling structure. If you aren’t absolutely certain, removing popcorn ceiling is not a do-it-yourself project. A professional should be called that has the proper equipment to remove potentially-dangerous materials.

  2. The next step is to wet your ceiling with the lawn sprayer. Make sure you only work in small areas. Only spray a few square feet at a time and don’t touch the surrounding drywall. You may have to spray it twice in order to get enough water into the popcorn. It can take up to 20 minutes to get the ceiling thoroughly soaking.

  3. Once the popcorn is good and wet, put on your mask and use a putty knife to gently scrape the popcorn, mostly relying on a “push” instead of a “pull” stroke. Use around a 35° angle on the scraping tool so you can scrape off the popcorn without gouging the sheetrock in the process.

Once you are done scraping, you’ll find regular sheetrock under the popcorn. At this point, you can take a close look and make sure there aren’t any cracks in the sheet rock. Any cracks or water leaks will need to be repaired.

Once you have removed your popcorn ceiling, it is recommended that you have a professional company retexture and repaint your new ceiling.
